Photo Stories
Working with award-winning photographer Christian Sinibaldi, we have been out taking portraits of people in the Eastern part of Northampton, often referred to as the Eastern District. These were available to view as part of a new exhibition at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery from Saturday 27 November until Friday 17 December 2021. The photographs were accompanied by audio recordings and captions in a multimedia exhibition with a 3-wall projected design in the Museum’s Main Hall.
There are over 230 portraits capturing 190 people across the Eastern District with their own voices and stories. You can see some of the portraits below!
You can also check out the images at our dedicated 60 Miles Portraits Instagram account. We’ll be releasing one of the images each day.
We are delighted that Christian’s portrait ‘Uncle and Auntie’ has been selected for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize Exhibition 2021.
The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize is one of the most prestigious photography awards in the world, celebrating the very best in contemporary portrait photography.
This year the exhibition will take place at the new arts hub Cromwell Place, London, until 2 January 2022, while the National Portrait Gallery building in St Martin’s Place is closed until 2023 for major redevelopment works.
The portrait has also been selected as a winner for the 2021 1854 Media Portrait of Britain awards. You can view the rest of the winners here.
It’s simply fascinating how many people made Northampton their new home over the last 50 years - all attracted by similar promises and all looking for a new home. With a very open and honest approach we talked to the people of Northampton, mainly in the Eastern District and unveiled an incredible array of stories, many quite similar on the way they started and of course, very different on the way they developed. Only thing in common for sure: Northampton has become the place they call home and the place where many have grown their families and careers.
